D’Youville Athletic Director Named to NCAA Committee

Buffalo, New York – April 19, 2017 – Brian Cavanaugh, D’Youville College athletic director, has been appointed to the for a four-year term.

The committee was formed in 1997 with the mission of improving “the condition of sportsmanship and ethical conduct in all aspects of college athletics by developing and implementing strategies that foster greater acceptance of the value of respect, fairness, civility, honesty, and responsibility.”

The 11 member committee has focused on providing the best practice tools for campus and athletic conference implementation and increasing the awareness and profile of the NCAA Sportsmanship Awards.

“I am honored to have been selected for this committee and look forward to serving,” Cavanaugh said.

Cavanaugh joined D’Youville in 2006 after 25 years as head hockey coach at Canisius College where he took the hockey program from NCAA Division III to Division I. His teams had 340 career wins and he is 24th on the all-time coaches’ association list.

He was also on the Canisius faculty as a physical education professor.

Cavanaugh earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the State University of New York College at Brockport where he played on their varsity hockey team for four years. He graduated as their all-time leading scorer and was selected as their most valuable player for three years.

During his undergraduate career he set 12 scoring records and continues to hold the single game assist record (7) that was set 42 years ago.

The college renamed their hockey MVP award The Brian Cavanaugh MVP Award in his honor.

Cavanaugh is a member of the Canisius College Hall of Fame and a past president of the where he served as a board member for 15 years. He was on the NCAA hockey selection committee for the HOBEY Baker Award, college hockey’s Heisman Trophy equivalent.

Cavanaugh assisted former Sabres and Montreal coach Scotty Bowman and the Buffalo Sabres in the mid-1980s with game preparation and advance scouting.

The NCAA, headquartered in Indianapolis, has 1123 colleges and universities as members.
