Traditional D鈥橸ouville Baccalaureate Ceremony Set for Friday, May 19

Buffalo, New York 鈥 May 09, 2017 鈥 D鈥橸ouville College will hold its traditional Baccalaureate and Hooding Ceremony on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 7:30 PM in , 348 Porter Avenue, corner of Fargo Avenue.

The centuries old and colorful ceremony features graduating students and college faculty members in full academic regalia marching in procession from the front of the on Porter Avenue to the adjacent church entrance.

At the ceremony, each graduating student will be hooded by a faculty member in the student鈥檚 discipline indicating the student has completed the requirements for either a bachelor鈥檚 degree or an advanced degree.

Lorrie A. Clemo, D鈥橸ouville president, will speak at the ceremony.

Families and friends of the graduates and D鈥橸ouville faculty and staff will fill the entire church for this special and unique ceremony. A reception in the follows.

The Baccalaureate Ceremony traditionally is held the day before the college commencement which will be held Saturday, May 20 at .

The baccalaureate ceremony derives from the medieval European custom of presenting candidates for the degree of Bachelor (bacca) with laurels (lauri) for 鈥渟ermonic oration.鈥 The ceremony is a service of worship in celebration of thanksgiving for lives dedicated to learning and wisdom, according to a number of sources.

It is believed to have originated at the University of Oxford in 1432.
