D鈥橸ouville University has identified 285 Delaware Avenue as the planned location for its proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine, pending pre-accreditation approval.

The creation of a new medical school is expected to have a transformative impact鈥攂oth on D鈥橸ouville and the broader Western New York region. At full capacity, the program will bring hundreds of new students to the city, strengthen D鈥橸ouville鈥檚 undergraduate health programs, attract new talent, and build a stronger pipeline to local healthcare providers, many of which are facing critical workforce shortages.

鈥淲e鈥檙e incredibly proud to take this next step in establishing what we expect will soon become D鈥橸ouville鈥檚 College of Osteopathic Medicine,鈥 said Dr. Lorrie Clemo, President of D鈥橸ouville University. 鈥淏ringing a medical school to Buffalo aligns with our mission to transform healthcare education in ways that are community-focused, equitable, and rooted in the neighborhoods we serve. This new building is not just an investment in education鈥攊t鈥檚 an investment in our region鈥檚 future.鈥

Located just over a mile from D鈥橸ouville鈥檚 main campus, the 285 Delaware site was intentionally selected to keep the medical school in the heart of Buffalo. Developed in partnership with Uniland Development, the building reflects the university鈥檚 long-standing commitment to remaining embedded in the city and strengthening its accessibility and connection to the community.

D鈥橸ouville is working towards accreditation with the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) and is hopeful to share positive news later this summer. If approved, the first class of students is expected to begin in Fall 2026, with the program expanding to a total of 720 students by its sixth year.

The timing is urgent. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the U.S. could face a shortage of 17,800 to 48,000 primary care physicians by 2034. In New York State alone, more than 27,000 physicians are expected to retire in the coming years.

The proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine will further strengthen D鈥橸ouville鈥檚 position as a regional leader in doctoral education. With a growing portfolio of advanced degree programs across healthcare, education, and leadership, the university is deeply committed to preparing graduates for the highest levels of professional practice. This new site builds on that momentum鈥攅xpanding both our reach and our ability to meet critical workforce needs across Buffalo and beyond.
