On December 1, 2025, D’Youville University proudly hosted the Patricia H. Garman School of Nursing’s annual Pinning Ceremony, honoring the newest class of nursing graduates as they began their transition into the professional field of nursing. The ceremony, held in D’Youville’s Health Professions Hub, brought together families, faculty, friends, and members of the healthcare community to celebrate the dedication, resilience, and achievements of the graduating class.

The nursing pinning ceremony is a deeply meaningful tradition in the profession—symbolizing not only the completion of rigorous academic and clinical training, but also the commitment to compassion, advocacy, and service. Each graduate received a pin bearing the emblem of the Patricia H. Garman School of Nursing, signifying their entrance into a lifelong career of care and ethical responsibility.

During the ceremony, nursing students Damone Adryon Kenneth Thomas and Jasmin M. Rodriguez spoke about their experience in the program, their remarkable life journeys to D’Youville, and their professional aspirations.

Professor Susan Arnold, Clinical Assistant Professor, offered keynote remarks to students and attendees on behalf of the Patricia H. Garman School of Nursing. Other faculty participants included Dean Shannon McCrory-Churchill; Professor Cindy Adymy, Associate Dean; Dr. Diane Bartella, Director of the Accelerated BSN Program; Professor Kristina Buran, Director of the Traditional BSN and RN-BSN Programs, and Professor Stephanie Juliano, Clinical Assistant Professor.

More than 40 December 2025 Bachelor of Science Nursing graduates received their pin. Graduates also recited the Nurse’s Pledge, reinforcing their dedication to integrity, patient-centered care, and the values foundational to the nursing profession.

Reflecting on the significance of the traditional pinning ceremony, Dean Shannon McCrory-Churchill commented, "The pinning ceremony is more than a tradition—it is a testament to the resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment of our profession's newest members.

D’Youville trained nurses have been tested academically, emotionally, and clinically. They show strength and grace through challenge and uncertainty. I am confident that each of our graduates will bring excellence, empathy, and dignity to the communities and patients they serve. Nursing Management
Nurse managers are the leaders of nursing teams and play pivotal roles in supporting, recruiting, and managing nursing employees. Since nurse managers have experience as practicing nurses, they are uniquely qualified to understand the demands of a primary care environment and balance administrative and staff decisions while ensuring patients receive superior care. Nursing Educator

One year of nursing practice with active unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse.
Current CPR certification with psychomotor component.

Preferential admission awarded to students with undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).
Proof of official transcripts are not required for admission but must be verified before students can begin classes. Non-U.S. students must submit ‘course-by-course- evaluation (or equivalent) of all transcripts through the World Education Services (WES) or other approved foreign transcript evaluation agencies.
Canadian RN students must submit both their original Certificate of Registration (issued upon passing initial examination) and a copy of their Annual Registration Renewal (showing current unencumbered license).

Transferability

D’Youville University President Dr. Lorrie Clemo announced today that Dr. Shannon McCrory-Churchill has been appointed dean of the Patricia H. Garman School of Nursing, effective immediately. A distinguished educator, researcher, and leader in nursing practice, Dr. McCrory-Churchill brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to preparing the next generation of nursing professionals.

Dr. McCrory-Churchill has held a variety of academic and clinical leadership roles throughout her career, with a proven record of advancing nursing education and strengthening community partnerships. Her focus on student-centered learning, innovation in clinical preparation, and dedication to addressing healthcare workforce needs align directly with D’Youville’s mission to provide transformative education that serves the greater good.

“Dr. McCrory-Churchill is the ideal leader to guide our School of Nursing during this critical time for the profession,” said President Clemo. “Her vision for innovation in nursing education, paired with her passion for advancing access to healthcare and supporting our students, will ensure D’Youville continues to prepare nurses who are both highly skilled and deeply compassionate.”

The Zeta Nu Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing at ��ӰԺ celebrated a momentous occasion on April 14th with the induction of a record-breaking 87 new members. This significant event recognizes the exceptional scholarly pursuits and dedication to excellence within the university's nursing program.

The Zeta Nu Chapter holds a rich history at D'Youville, having been established in 1982 by alumna Mary Catherine Kennedy. This long-standing tradition of honoring nursing excellence continues to inspire students.

This year's induction ceremony featured alumna Savannah Conroy RN, BSN, an ICU nurse at Kenmore Hospital, as the guest speaker. Savannah shared her impactful experiences as a Sigma nurse, stating, "As a sigma nurse I am constantly learning. Sigma teaches leadership and builds confidence. I am able to give back through service. In my work I recognize the healthcare disparity in our community and am stepping into a movement that will make a difference." Her words resonated with the inductees, highlighting the practical application of Sigma's values in addressing real-world healthcare challenges.

Family Nurse Practitioner
Family Nurse Practitioners possess a comprehensive understanding of all dimensions of patient care. They assess, diagnose, plan and institute management of health care services for individuals and families in need of care. With this advanced degree in nursing, individuals have the capabilities which include but are not limited to diagnosing medical conditions, prescribing medications, creating treatment plans, performing advanced procedures, serving as a primary care provider, and operating clinics and billing for their services independently.

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Like Family Nurse Practitioners, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners are providers of holistic care and possess an understanding of all dimensions of patient care. They assess, diagnose and provide treatment using an in-depth understanding of mental health disorders. They treat patients of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds as they work with individuals, families and groups. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners are often employed in traditional outpatient and inpatient settings, though as holders of advanced degrees, they often develop their own private practices, conduct research, and/or do consulting work.

Biography

Professional Registered Nurse with a background in caring for geriatric, medical-surgical and community health patients. In 2003, I transitioned into academia where I have enjoyed leading and teaching future nurses. My philosophy of teaching is based on my beliefs that teaching and learning need to be a collaborative process, where both instructor and student engage in the learning process. My teaching depicts the teacher as the facilitator of the knowledge and the student as an active participant in learning and understanding the key concepts to build a solid foundation in the nursing field. The foundation laid in the educational process will directly impact the nurse they will become, and the care patients receive.

Biography

I am now in my first tenure-track faculty role at D’Youville University in Buffalo, NY. My teaching responsibility includes Adult Health Promotion, Health Assessment, and Adult Clinical Practicum. I worked for four years as a critical care nurse and have subsequently worked for the past 12 years as an acute care nurse practitioner in a mixed medical and neurological ICU.

Research Interests

My long-term research interests are concerned with the development of a comprehensive understanding of end-of-life (EOL) care and the improvement of communication to enhance the quality of EOL in the intensive care unit (ICU). With a PhD in Nursing and specific training and expertise in EOL and critical care, I have completed and published two studies for my dissertation, including a qualitative interview study focusing on exploring family’s experiences with ventilated COVID-19 patients, and a quasi-experiment to test a nurse-led communication intervention among surrogates in the ICU.
